Late 18th or early 19th-century Follower of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, Oil on canvas measuring 34.5 x 27 cm. The work depicts a richly decorated French 18th-century interior. The painter’s hand shows a free expression of artistic vigor, as he has removed a figure from the scene. This indicates that this is a standalone work and not imitation based on a larger piece.
The painting style resembles a study for a larger painting. The use of color is quite pronounced but is subdued by a discolored varnish layer.
The work is housed in an original gilt Louis XV frame, which has minor damage to the plaster. These style frames correspond to the works of Fragonard.
The back of the painting bears a unique wax seal on the stretcher bar, which appears to be of Eastern European origin.
Being a follower of Jean-Honoré Fragonard has been confirmed based on high-quality photographs by René Millet.
